CanHaptics Team Crescendo Project Iteration 2: Multimodal Music Notation

My team and I are creating a music notation viewer with haptic, visual and auditory feedback. This is my take on what happened in our second development iteration — In this iteration, we continued building our multimodal music notation viewer. To ease coordination of synchronous sessions, our team worked in pairs, divided by timezones. Based on the results of our previous project iteration, Sabrina K. and Juliette R. tackled how the transition from a note to another should feel…

CanHaptics Lab 3: Communicate something with Haply

Task: create a vocabulary of 3 words and communicate them using only haptic feedback — Goals In this lab, we aim to explore different ways of communicating a small vocabulary using haptic feedback. Materials My code for this assignment can be found here. Tools Haply device, Processing Development Environment. tl;dr In this exercise, Hannah E. and I worked together in trying to represent the words sticky, bouncy, bumpy, and…

CanHaptics Team Crescendo Project Iteration 1: Multimodal Music Notation

My team and I are creating a music notation viewer with haptic, visual and auditory feedback. This is my take on what happened in our first development iteration — There are three main components that go into building our multimodal music notation viewer: the visuals, the sounds, and the haptic interactions using a Haply device. Since we are using Processing as a development system for the Haply, and it doesn’t natively offer a music notation viewer system, we split…

CanHaptics Lab 4: Controlled actuation using PID

Task: create an actuated interaction using Haply and a PID controller — Goals The main goals of this lab were to get comfortable with tuning PID controllers and learn how to implement a guided interaction using Haply. Materials PID example provided by the course instructors. My modified version of that code can be found here. Tools Haply device, Processing Development Environment. Tuning the PID Tuning a proportional-integral-derivative controller…

CanHaptics Lab 2: Intro to Haply

Task: Get started with the Haply device, create a maze design using the “Hello, Wall” example. — Goals The main goals of this lab were to get started using Haply and playing with Processing and fisica. In this activity, we also designed a simple haptic virtual environment based on existing examples for Haply. Materials Haply device and cables, assembly tutorial, firmware and examples. Tools Box cutter, torx allen key (provided…

CanHaptics Lab 1: No-tech puppeteering

Task: Create three hardware sketches that move 1mm, 10mm and 100mm. No-tech materials only. — Goals The main goals for this lab are to understand the different levels of sketching as described by Camille Moussette, and to get acquainted with DIY sketching resources. We mainly focus on transforming crude ideas into “quick and dirty” low-fidelity prototypes, which fall into the “minutes to hours” level.
